BrainWhale VMS

Our own video management platform. It takes streams from your cameras, shows them live, records the archive to disk and decides who is allowed to see what. Analytics modules plug straight into it.

What it does

Live view and video wall

Cameras in a grid or one by one, layouts saved per operator. Sites and camera groups live in a single tree, so an operator finds the right camera by name, not by IP address.

Recording and archive

Continuous recording in segments, search by camera and time, playback and export of a fragment. Retention policy cleans up old footage on its own.

Roles and access rights

Rights are granted to a role, not to a person, and inherited down the camera tree. Every operator action is written to the audit log.

Administration

Adding cameras, checking a stream before saving, encoding and recording settings, storage state — all from the administrator client, without touching the servers.

How it is built

The system is split into independent services, so a site with two cameras and a site with several hundred are built from the same parts.

01
Management server
Configuration, cameras, users and roles, retention policies. Keeps its data in PostgreSQL.
02
Recording servers
Receive RTSP, write segments to their own disks, serve live video. Add a server — add capacity.
03
API gateway
A single REST and WebSocket entry point for clients. Clients never touch the database directly.
04
Clients
Windows applications for the operator and for the administrator: live view, archive, camera and rights management.
# stream path
camera rtsp://… ──┐
│
recorder ◄─────────┘ segments to disk
│
gateway ◄─────────┘ REST · WebSocket
│
client ◄─────────┘ live · archive
✔ Video is not stored in the database — segments go to the recording servers disks, the database keeps only the index. That is why the archive grows without slowing the system down.

Add analytics on top

The surveillance system answers what is happening in the frame. Analytics answers who exactly drove through: plate, seatbelt, colour, make. It is the second half of the same platform.
